GERD Patient Guide

Stomach Acidity (GERD) — Guidelines for Patients. Learn about lifestyle changes, diet, and when to seek medical help.

Understanding GERD

What is GERD?

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) occurs when stomach acid flows back into the food pipe, causing discomfort and potential damage.

Acid reflux occurs when stomach acid flows back into the food pipe (esophagus). This causes burning in the chest (heartburn), bitter taste in the mouth, cough, and can damage the lining of the food pipe if left untreated.

Initially, medication is used for treatment, which provides relief to most patients. However, some patients may require surgery.

Management

Lifestyle Changes

Simple changes to your daily routine can significantly reduce GERD symptoms and prevent flare-ups.

Lose Weight

Lose weight if possible — excess weight increases abdominal pressure.

Quit Smoking

Stop smoking — it weakens the lower esophageal sphincter.

Don't Lie Down After Meals

Do not lie down for at least 2 hours after eating.

Elevate Head of Bed

Elevate the head side of your bed 6-8 inches while sleeping.

Avoid Tight Clothing

Avoid tight belts and clothes that press on the stomach.

Reduce Stress

Reduce mental stress — anxiety can worsen acid reflux symptoms.

Nutrition

What to eat and what to avoid to keep acid reflux under control.
